Perched dramatically beside Sydney Harbour, overlooking Luna Park and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the North Sydney Olympic Pool is gearing up for a grand revival. After a long and ambitious redevelopment, the pool is scheduled to reopen to the public in early 2026, promising to reclaim its place as one of Sydney’s most beloved waterfront swimming destinations.

A Storied Legacy, Reimagined

This isn’t just any pool — the North Sydney Olympic Pool has deep heritage. Originally opened in 1936, it’s witnessed legendary swimmers and countless community moments.

Now, after years of careful reconstruction, the facility is being totally reimagined: the renovation includes a 50-metre outdoor pool, a 25-metre indoor pool, a family leisure pool with splash-play features, a warm-water therapy pool, spa and sauna, and more.

Adding to the experience will be a 970-seat grandstand, a modern gym, a crèche, and a café (including a revived Ripples Café) complete with harbour views.

What’s New & Why It Matters

  • Natural Light & Design: Skylights over the indoor pool hall are being installed to flood the space with daylight.
  • Wellness Facilities: Alongside the pools, the redevelopment features wellness amenities including sauna, steam rooms, and warm-water relaxation zones.
  • Community Spaces: Beyond swimming, the centre will host a gym, a crèche, and retail.
  • Accessibility: The design includes accessible access, lift connections, and modern change-room facilities.

Challenges Along the Way

The redevelopment has not been without controversy. The projected budget has ballooned to $122 million, and there have been delays, legal disputes, and cost overruns.

Construction is expected to be handed over by November 2025, but an additional two to three months of commissioning is required before the facility opens, pushing the public reopening to early 2026.

Why You’ll Want to Visit (Again)

  • Harbour Views: The pool’s location makes it one of the most scenic in Sydney — swimming with a backdrop of the bridge and Luna Park.
  • Family Friendly: With the new leisure pool and play areas, it’s perfect for kids and families.
  • Wellness + Fitness: Whether you want to train, relax, or just unwind, the upgraded amenities deliver.
  • Iconic Reunion: For locals, swimmers, and tourists alike, this is a chance to reconnect with a piece of Sydney’s heritage in a fresh, modern way.
